By Gilbert Artifico
Quezon City, the most progressive city in the Philippines, will host the most comprehensive amateur boxing tournament in the country. This is the 2010 PLDT-ABAP NCR Youth Amateur Boxing Championships to be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle Covered Basketball Court.
In partnership with the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP), the event will stage its Opening Ceremonies at exactly 3:00PM of September 17, 2010 showcasing the cultural activities and sports program of Quezon City. The Amateur Boxing Tournament will run up to September 21, 2010.
Spearheaded by ABAP's Deputy Executive Director for NCR, Engr. Gilbert Artificio quoted: "It was indeed a great pleasure for us in ABAP that Quezon City accepted the invitation. Talents from the grassroots level within Metro Manila will emerge from this competition and their identification will boost our search to come up with competitive athletes that will represent the Philippines in international tournaments."
Based in our sports history, Amateur Boxing provides the best chance in giving us the most elusive Olympic Gold. In the past 20 Olympic Games, Philippines has garnered a total of nine medals [2 silver and 7 bronze] in which five came from Amateur Boxing. The two silver medals came from Anthony Villanueva (Featherweight) and Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco (Light Flyweight) while the three bronze medals came from Jose Villanueva (Bantamweight), Ruel Velasco (Light Flyweight), and Leopoldo Serrantes (Light Flyweight).
The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is currently headed by ABAP Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, ABAP President Ricky P. Vargas, ABAP Secretary General Patrick C. Gregorio, and ABAP Executive Director Edgar Picson. They provide the support needed by the ABAP National Team and boosts the confidence within through their presence. It was indeed a matter of time that our Olympic Gold will become a reality.
"We know that Professional Boxing is a big hit nowadays, but it all starts in Amateur Boxing. Knowing the basics, instilling discipline in ourselves, and having a loving heart for the sport, are the common virtues that makes up a complete athlete. Let us all help in establishing this foundation which will uplift the level of competitiveness and professionalism in Philippine Sports." Artificio added.
The PLDT-ABAP NCR Youth Amateur Boxing Championships (NCRABC) is a comprehensive boxing tournament designed to establish camaraderie and closer brotherhood among the different boxing organizations in the National Capital Region. The medalists of this area tournament will represent NCR in next year's PLDT-ABAP National Youth Amateur Boxing Championships in Cagayan de Oro City.
As of to date, establishment of a Regional Training Center for Amateur Boxing was proposed to Hon. Mayor Herbert M. Bautista and is currently looking at the Amoranto Memorial Sports Complex. This will be a very big development for Amateur Boxing in the country.
Salamat Quezon City at mabuhay ang Amateur Boxing sa Pilipinas!
